TANGSEN, in collaboration with Kibaha Town DC, conducted a field visit to women entrepreneurs engaged in poultry farming in Kibaha District, Pwani Region. The visit took place in Soga Ward, Vikuge Village, for the purpose of assessing the area of collaboration and supporting the of ongoing efforts to economically empower women involved in livestock and agribusiness activities by using some source of energy.

The visit brought together district officials from the Community Development Department participating with the approval of the District Director alongside TANGSEN technical staffs. The joint mission aimed to assess progress, strengthen collaboration, and identify opportunities to further support women-led enterprises through Productive Use of Energy (PUE).

During the visit, the team met members of the Lukundo Women Group, a group of five women entrepreneurs united by their shared investment in poultry farming and chick hatchery operations. The group operates modern hatchery machines powered by grid electricity to incubate and hatch eggs, demonstrating how reliable energy access can enhance productivity and business efficiency.

Lukundo Women Group established in 2022 and officially registered in 2023, its operations began with a single incubator machine capable of holding 15 trays at a time, producing more than 420 chicks per cycle. But due to the demand increase and market expanded, the group sought financial support from the district council and got a loan of TZS 10 million provided by the district, they were able to purchase two larger incubators with capacities of 500 and 700 eggs per cycle, significantly boosting their production capacity and income potential.

TANGSEN continues to work closely with local government authorities across the Coast Region to ensure that women entrepreneurs benefit from sustainable and productive energy solutions. Through such partnerships, the organization aims to enhance women’s income-generating opportunities, promote clean and reliable energy use, and contribute to inclusive local economic development.

TANGSEN, in collaboration with the Kibaha District Council, has successfully conducted training sessions on the development of Climate Change Adaptation Plans (CCAPs) in two wards Dutumi and Magindu specifically in the villages of Madege and Magindu.

The training, led by TANGSEN staff alongside representatives from the Kibaha District Council, involved ward and village-level leaders, including ward executive officers, village executive officers, natural resources officers, livestock officers, community development officers, respected village elders, and religious leaders.

The villages in Dutumi and Magindu wards are primarily composed of farming and pastoralist communities that rely on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods. Additionally, the majority of households in these areas use charcoal and firewood as their main sources of cooking energy both for home consumption and for school meal preparation.

These livelihood practices, combined with extensive tree cutting for charcoal production and firewood, have contributed to environmental degradation and increased vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. These impacts include heavy rainfall that damages crops and infrastructure such as roads, as well as prolonged droughts that have led to food shortages and hunger crises most notably in 2004 and 2016.

By empowering local leaders to spearhead Climate Change Adaptation Plans (CCAPs), TANGSEN and the Kibaha District Council are supporting a proactive, community-driven approach to climate challenges helping villages in Dutumi and Magindu safeguard their environment and ensure a more secure and sustainable future.

In a remarkable collaboration aimed at advancing sustainable energy solutions, TANGSEN partnered with local government officials and village leaders to reach six wards within Kibaha District. Their mission was to gather critical insights from users of clean cooking solutions especially gas stoves that had been distributed as part of an initiative to promote clean cooking energy.

Motivated by guidance from the Kibaha District Council, this initiative was done to evaluate the real-world usage of the stoves, encourage consistent adoption, and plan for future replacements. The goal was clear to reduce reliance on harmful fuels and foster a cleaner, healthier cooking environment for both entrepreneurs and families.

The purpose of the data collection was also to begin identifying local entrepreneurs in areas such as Mlandizi, along with the possible obstacles they may be facing in adopting clean cooking solutions. Special attention was given to understanding the situation of mama lishe (informal women food vendors) and energy product sellers, who are key stakeholders in the transition to clean energy.

By gathering these insights, TANGSEN and its partners aim to better understand the current dynamics on the ground. The information will help shape future strategies to support communities more effectively whether through training, improved supply chains, or increased access to affordable clean cooking technologies.
